Lion Derek Ledda was born in Fort Riley, Kansas on April 18, 1950.  He attended Georgetown University in Washington D.C. and graduated in 1972 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Foreign Service.  He attended the University of California at Davis School of Law and received his juris doctor degree in 1979.  Before attending law school, he worked as a branch manager for Arlington-Fairfax Savings and Loan.  After law school, he was awarded a prestigious one year California Senate Fellowship.  He passed the California Bar exam in 1980.  He has worked as an attorney for California Rural Legal Assistance, representing rural poor people, for the California Agricultural Labor Relations Board, enforcing laws to protect the organizing rights of farm workers and for the California Department of Social Services enforcing laws that protect the health and safety of children, the disabled and seniors in licensed facilities.  He retired in August 2009 as a Deputy General Counsel IV for the California Department of Education.
 
Lion Derek joined the Maharlika Lion's Club in 1994, and served as a 100% President of a 100% club in 2005-06.  In 2006-07, he served as Poppy Zone chair and was also appointed to the District's Long Range Planning Committee, which he chaired in 2007-08.  He is particularly committed to supporting "My Sister's House", a non-profit agency that provides shelter and services to victims of domestic violence and also "Philippine National Day Association", which sponsors an annual youth leadership conference and a college scholarship program for deserving youth who are actively involved in community service.   Lion Derek has for 15 years chaired Maharlika's "5th Sunday Project", which has helped feed over 21,000 of Sacramento's homeless men, women and children at Loaves and Fishes.  In 2009, he received  and International Presidents Al Brandel's Commendation as an "Everyday Hero" and is also a past recipient of the International President's Certificate if Appreciation.  He is a past Sacramento Region Lion of the Year, and his club's tree tine Lion of the Year.  He is proud to be a Melvin Jones Fellow but especially proud to be a Maharlikan and a District 4-C5 Lion.  Lion Derek served a Cabinet Secretary for 2009-2010 and was elected 2nd Vice District Governor at the 2010 District 4-C5 Convention.
 
Lion Derek attributes his commitment to community service to the example set by his personal heroes and lifelong role models, his parents Daniel and Cres Ledda.
